12-Step Meditation Garden

This beautiful place on our house grounds is an idyllic spot for meditation and relaxation for our tenants during their recovery. Once finished, the garden is open to the recovery community (by appointment only) – including other recovery homes, treatment centers, and sponsors – to bring their tenants, clients, or sponsees to work on the 12-step program.

The 12-Step Meditation Garden: A Golden Opportunity

Originally published in the ORH Newsletter

When I decided to consider pursuing my Girl Scout Gold Award, a representative of Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio advised me to ask myself what issues are affecting my community and how I can help address the root cause.

I did some research, and according to Geauga County Public Health, the number one priority in the 2023-2025 Geauga County Community Health Plan is Behavioral Health (mental health, and alcohol, tobacco and drug use).

I recalled my involvement volunteering for the Red Tulip Project. The Girl Scout troop I have been a part of since I was in kindergarten planted vegetables in raised garden beds behind the Monarch Meadow Level 2 Recovery Home for women in Claridon Township. Being outdoors and working hard with my fellow Girl Scouts made me feel like I was making a difference. I was aware the woman living in the home were working toward independence after battling addiction. It was when I had a chance to talk with the women that I was truly inspired. They were so kind, and I admired the strength and support they gave each other.

Because of this experience, I realized that I wanted to help bring awareness to mental health and addiction issues affecting our community. One root cause of addiction is not having addiction support resources available. I wanted to educate others that there is a place where people can go for addiction support.

With the help of Kristy Mowry, the Executive Director of the Red Tulip Project, I discovered the beginning planning phases of a peaceful one-of-a-kind, butterfly-shaped garden beginning to take shape behind the Monarch Meadow Recovery Home for Women. The garden will serve as a serene and inspiring space for reflection, recovery meetings, and personal growth. Walking paths will lead to 12 unique stations (pods), each symbolizing a step in the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) recovery process. The stations will feature flowers, décor, and signage reflecting the AA Principles.

Research has shown that outdoor activities, gardening, and time in nature increase dopamine and serotonin levels, which can reduce anxiety and depression while promoting mental wellness. This innovative space will provide a peaceful retreat for those in recovery, their sponsors, and loved ones impacted by addiction.

I have since learned the basics of garden design from Chad George at Lowe’s Garden Center in Bainbridge, which has allowed me to use my creative side.  Kristy Mowry with the Red Tulip Project has given me the opportunity to speak to large groups about the project and attend local community engagement events. My goal is to continue raising enough funds to complete my Girl Scout Gold Award by sponsoring one or more stations (pods) within the garden.

The garden will be open by appointment for recovery meetings, meditation, and reflection.
